Awesome Alpacas is co-owned by Joe Porter (Monroe, NC) and Daphne Porter Heffler (Florence, SC), a brother and sister team. Joe and I grew up on a farm where raising livestock was a part of our family business. We each had duties and responsibilities, but I readily admit I had very little interest (or responsibilities) for the animals. Joe however found the livestock interesting and always enjoyed helping to care for them. With an interest in maintaining the farm lifestyle and raising livestock, Joe obtained a Master's Degree in Animal Science from Clemson University and eventually purchased a farm. For the past 20 years he has been actively involved as an owner and breeder of different types of animals and has often been a resource for others in the livestock industry.

I graduated form the Medical University of South Carolina with a degree in Nursing and have spent the past thirty years in the health care industry caring for people. Ironically, I was the one who first saw and fell in love with Alpacas! I knew exactly who to call to help me explore the alpaca industry and evaluate the investment feasibilities. Joe's years of experience with animal care, nutrition, breeding and health maintenance made him a knowledgeable and valuable resource. After rather extensive research, we decided to become Alpaca owners and breeders.

Our first purchase was four (4) females which were bred to superior herdsires. We have continued to breed very selectively and our crias have reflected this in the show ring. We have grown from four (4) to 22 alpacas in three (3) years and have learned so much about the industry! Our focus continues to be on quality rather than numbers, and on providing assistance to our customers after a sale.
